RECOVERY — WHAT TO EXPECT

recovery — what to expect

  • The first 15 days are some of the most crucial for the success of your hair transplant. Therefore, it is very important that you abide by the instructions provided. Remember you can always contact us in case you’re uncertain on how to proceed.

The days referred here start counting on the first day after your last day of surgery. Example: if your surgery performed was over 2 days and ended on a Wednesday, then Day 1 should be a Thursday.

Below is the expected timeline for the first 12 months post-op. As this is a very slow and incremental process, we must understand that in order to observe the full effect of a hair transplant, we must wait for it to completely mature. This means that we cannot draw any concrete conclusions by observing the way your hair is behaving along the first 5-8 months (sometimes even more). Each patient has his/her own way of healing and progressing. Whilst we prefer to observe quicker recoveries and quicker growths, this does not necessarily mean that a slower growing hair transplant will not be as successful as a faster growing one. Bear this in mind as you go through the healing/recovery process and try not to stress too much about it’s progress.

In your check-ups, Dr. Ferreira will make sure to let you know if he see’s anything irregular with your transplant. If he does not, then you can be at ease that everything is going according to planned.

  • The healing process begins immediately after surgery. At this point, you should feel like the instructions are sufficiently clear. Use the saline solution and take the medication provided. Some swelling may appear during these first few days. It should resolve on its own over the coming days.

During this period, you should be washing the donor area only.

  • This will be the first day of your full wash (donor and recipient). If available, you may have your first wash at the clinic. It is also the first day you start applying the aloe vera on both donor and recipient.

  • Scabs should disappear within this timeframe. Some redness may be present.

  • Shedding of the transplanted hair may begin to occur in this period. This is normal and a healthy part of the evolution of the transplant. It is also important that hair that is supposed to shed actually sheds.

  • During this period, nothing much happens. Your transplanted hair follicles are resting. Redness may still be apparent and your recipient's skin may feel more sensitive.

  • Some activity and growth may be seen at this point. It is also the moment of your first revision with Dr. Ferreira. This may either in-person or by sending us photos and/or videos.

  • Your hair transplant is maturing and you many notice hairs thickening and coverage improving over these months.

  • Your hair transplant is very close to full maturity. In most cases, we can see your complete result at this point.

  • Your hair quality will keep improving over the coming months. You may find that your transplanted hair becomes easier to comb and more manageable.

In some cases, new transplanted hairs may still appear at this point.
